Where sitemaps hide

The sitemaps.org protocol lets a site announce its sitemap with a Sitemap: line in robots.txt, and RFC 9309 keeps that line outside any user-agent group, so every crawler sees it. That's the only public, standard place to look. Everything else is convention:

PlatformUsual location
WordPress 5.5+ (core)/wp-sitemap.xml
Yoast SEO, Rank Math/sitemap_index.xml
All in One SEO/sitemap.xml
Shopify/sitemap.xml (index of products, pages, collections, blogs)
Wix, Squarespace, Webflow/sitemap.xml
Next.js, Nuxt, Astro/sitemap.xml or /sitemap-index.xml

If none of those answer, the owner may have submitted the sitemap only in Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools, which is allowed and invisible from outside.

Questions people ask

How do I find the sitemap of a website?
Start with https://domain/robots.txt and look for a line starting with Sitemap:. If there is none, try /sitemap.xml, /sitemap_index.xml (Yoast, Rank Math) and /wp-sitemap.xml (WordPress core). The finder above does all of this in one go.
Can a sitemap be somewhere other than /sitemap.xml?
Yes. A sitemap can live at any URL and have any file name. Owners can submit it only in Search Console, so it may never appear in robots.txt. If the finder comes up empty, the site may still have a sitemap you can't see from outside.
Where is the sitemap on WordPress, Shopify, Wix or Squarespace?
WordPress core: /wp-sitemap.xml. Yoast SEO and Rank Math: /sitemap_index.xml. Shopify, Wix and Squarespace: /sitemap.xml, which is an index on Shopify and Wix.
Can I see a competitor's sitemap?
If it is public, yes: sitemaps are meant to be read by anyone. Paste the one you find into the URL extractor to get every page as a CSV.
