When an HTML sitemap is worth having
For a ten-page brochure site, the main menu already is the sitemap. HTML sitemaps earn their place on sites with deep catalogues, big archives or many location pages, where some pages sit five or more clicks from the homepage. One page that links to every section shortens those paths for crawlers and gives visitors who got lost a way back.
Keep it to pages you'd want found: the same indexable, canonical URLs as your XML sitemap. If it grows past a few hundred links, split it by section. Paste your XML sitemap in as the input and the two stay in step.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between an HTML and an XML sitemap?
An XML sitemap is for search engines: a machine-readable list of URLs submitted in Search Console. An HTML sitemap is an ordinary web page with links, written for people, that crawlers can also follow. Most sites that need one need both.
Do HTML sitemaps help SEO?
Indirectly. Google finds pages through links, so an HTML sitemap linked from the footer gives deep or poorly linked pages at least one crawlable internal link. It does not replace good navigation or an XML sitemap.
How are page names chosen?
From the last part of each URL path:
/services/web-design becomes "Web design", nested under "Services". Edit the downloaded HTML if you want different wording.
